Swimming
By: Lindsey Buchanan
The lake looked cold and lonely with deep blue waves. The clouds are covering the sun and are reflecting on to the lake. The waves are hitting the dock with a big splash, splash back and forth. The wind blows shivers up my spine as I begin to swim. The Jensen’s lake is one of the best thrills of the summer because it’s so close to our house. And that’s why I’m here right now. I kept on swimming and swimming as the cool water rushed on my skin.
“Claire come on let’s go,” I said in a tuned voice.
“Okay let’s go to the water trampoline” my best friend called.
We reached for the ladder to the water trampoline and walked on the bouncy material as I stood at the end of the water trampoline getting ready to jump in.
My body collapsed into the water with a big splash and then I started swimming. There I stood in the water doubtless as I treaded water. I stopped. In the water, there was a bright yellow with a dark denim blue stripe across the bottom. I thought to myself, should I go around it or under it. Na I’m too tired to go around the launcher, so I headed under. My arms led the way under as I kicked through the waves of the lake. But when I was half way through my body felt tense and stiff, I was starting to feel like I was trapped in a cage in jail. I couldn’t help thinking that I was going to die. A tired choking feeling entered my throat almost as if I were going to choke on my own breath. Still trying to get through I couldn’t hold my breath anymore and it was too late, because I had already swallowed a big gulp of water on my way out. But the pain didn’t stop. Instantly a big wave of badness entered my body I felt terrible like I was dyeing I couldn’t breathe and I couldn’t talk very good.
“Claire I can’t breathe,” my voice was wiggling like a loose tooth going back and forth.
“Are you okay?” she replied worried.
That was it I couldn’t talk anymore I had to get to shore. I lifted my feet from the water and started kicking, the fear kept on rushing through me. Still forcing my body through the water as it got shallower. I was still worried but I knew I could make it. Claire followed me. I was on the dock sitting there beginning to get my voice back it felt like I just swallowed a fish!
.
But all I could think about was what I did I went under instead of going around. But the lesson I learned was make sure you know what you’re doing and prepare for what you’re doing. This experience reflected on my life so I can learn to be a safe swimmer in my upcoming thrills in the next summer.

Paint the Feeling
Paint the feeling
The cold wind blew on my face as I reached out and grabbed my new best friend hand. Grace. I love Grace as a best friend. She’s kind, smart, loving and laughable. She’s everything I’ve ever wanted especially on the first day of school. As we walked up to my house I grabbed the handle of my door when mom did first. I let here open the door and come out onto the steps.
“Um, hi mom I could have opened the door myself couldn’t I?” I exclaimed.
“Yes there’s just something I have to tell you honey oh who’s this Ella,” asked mom.
“This is grace my new best friend,” I answered.
“Oh well then,” she said disappointed.
Then I noticed her tears slipping out.
“Mom are you ok?” I asked with wonder.
“Yes just so glad you found a best friend,” she answered.
“Well thank you mom!” I exclaimed so glad.
“Ok Grace let’s take you home.” I sighed.
Later that even, I was watching my mom do everything. How she talked how she walked and how she listened to me. She seemed so different like she was depressed. But I knew it wasn’t anything big just sad.
The next day was Saturday mom made me do chores and chores and chores. It seemed like she wanted everything to be clean. I’m not sure why she just did!
“Is there anything you want to do today honey, Maybe shopping, or out to eat?”
“Sure I’ll take maybe subway,” I answered.
“Ok that is fine with me,” mom said mysteriously.
Finally we go there and I was looking at the subway menu when I saw little droplets in her eyes.
“Mom why do you keep on crying?” I asked in a steady voice.
“Will talk about it after you order,” she answered in a scared way.
I ordered the fastest I could so that she would tell me. Something about me is I hate to wait I can’t ever be patient even if I try. Me and my mom sat down at a table.
“Mom tell me,” I yelped.
“We’re moving to Canada, “mom said hoping I wouldn’t scream.
“What!” I said as I sprayed my lemonade out of my mouth.
“You’re crazy this is the worst day ever!” I yelled in a strong voice.
“Let me explain dad got fired!”
“I don’t care about jobs all I care about is friends! I just made a best friend in this stinking world and now we have to move!” I yelled in disappointment.
“Honey settle down,” mom said calmly.
“No I’m not going to settle down I’m leaving.”
I strolled away without saying a word again. I was crying but there was nothing I could do about it!
The next day I was so mad I didn’t eat anything for breakfast all I could think about was me and my best friend and Canada. It was so hard to go to class today because I was again mad mad mad!
“Hi!” grace said.
“Hi” I answered in a sad voice.
“What’s wrong?”
“I’m moving.” I answered.
“What where?” she yelled.
“Canada”
Tears dripped down our faces as we grabbed each other hands.
“We can still be friends,” she replied.
“No we live in Arizona Canada is across the whole map” I said.
“Oh”
“We have to go to art class today.”I said.
“Common” she replied.
“Okay class today you can free paint that means do anything you want to do.” The art teacher explained.
I grabbed a big sheet and started to paint random black brown and gray spots.
Soon it was more dark and more dark and soon the whole painted art was black.
After every one was out of the art room the art teacher strolled down ward to me.
“Is there something wrong today.” She asked.
“I’m moving.” I answered.
“Oh so your mad,” she said.
“Yes”
“You know paint your life.”
“What do you mean paint your life?”
“Paint what you want the scenery of your life to be like or something like your new house. And paint what your feelings are so you can get thru it.”
I took that advice and walked away feeling a little better but without my best friend. Paint the feeling.
After school I found myself painting I was painting my house it was going to be huge and fun. But I would also have to paint money so it would come true. I wanted my bedroom to be huge to with a TV and couches and fun things then I heard my mom walking into my room.
“What do you want.” I asked.
“Can I start putting your stuff into boxes?” questioned mom.
“Sure” I said in a plain voice.
“What are you painting?”
“Nothing,” I answered.
Mom started putting clothes away when I realized I was moving in 2 days. And I was feeling better but I had to get to work on my backyard and the things I dreamed of. I painted my backyard as a river with streaming across the yard with trees surrounding every part of my house except a path that led up to a bridge that went across the river. Then I added on to the trail that led into a tree house that was mine.
Days went by and then I was standing on the blank floor with all the things in the moving truck and just a few mattresses for the night to sleep on.
“Mom I can’t go to sleep!”
“Just think about the house think about what you might want the house to look like”
And I guess that worked because I was sound asleep still feeling worried what it would be like and if my art teacher was right if she was I would come back to give her a hug.
“Wake up honey!” mom exclaimed.
“Fine” I finally said as I got up and sat on my plain mattress and looked around at my plain house.
Then before I knew it I was driving to Canada.
“Mom are we there?” I asked.
Then she pulled into a big beautiful driveway with a humongous house and a river with a bridge.
“Mom this is beautiful!” I exclaimed.
I hopped out of the car and ran into the house I ran against the big wooden floors with 2 spiral stairs. Then I found my bedroom. It was exactly what I imagined and drew.
“How do you like it honey?” mom exclaimed.
“I love it!” I answered.
“I’m glad you do!”
“Mom I’m sorry.” I said as I gave my mom a hug.
“I understand you just made a best friend and I understand that you’re mad about that!”
“Its fine I like it here it’s exactly what I wanted.”
Then I looked out my window I saw a grey minivan that looked a lot like graces. I ran down the stairs out my door and across the street. Then I saw her.
“Grace what are you doing here?”
“I guess I moved with you.” She exclaimed.
“Like a miracle!”
Oh I forgot I painted Grace!
The Haunted House
` The Haunted House
Ding dong the door bell rang as I was getting on my black high heeled boots. With a thud and a jump I ran out the door.
“Hi Chrissie!”I exclaimed.
“Hi Rose,” she replied.
“Are we ready to go get freaked out!”
“Of course I am, that’s why we’re going,” she said in a sassy voice.
“Let’s go,” I called.“So are you doing anything tonight because maybe we could have a sleep over?” Chrissie asked.
“Um, I think so it just depends on how tired I am tonight.”
“Ok,” she replied.
Together we ran out of the car and we were going thru the entrance when I felt this feeling unspeakable a feeling like something bad was going to happen. A feeling like I was doing the wrong thing, like I would be hurt. But it was too late I was being pulled in by my best friend Chrissie, at least I had her.
“Ok 5 bucks” the lady in a deep black shirt said.
“Um ok 5 bucks” I handed the lady the money and me and Chrissie strolled off into the deep darkness of the haunted house.
“Ahhhhh!” we screamed as we hugged each other trying to hide our fear.
Running ahead, the feeling came back, that deep dark feeling.
“I-I got to go!” I ran and ran past the things we screamed at.
“Wait where!” but it was too late I was stuck in one place and I couldn’t break away. With fear dripping out of my heart a ghost started talking.
“So do you think you can just run away?” the ghost said in a threatening voice.
“Yes,” I answered shaking in my boots.
“Stomp her!” her he yelled as another ghost appeared.
“If you can’t love us and have fun in this haunted house then go!”
“Chrissie,” I yelled. “Chrissie!” No reply.
Then the floor started to break and the wood was falling under my feet. My heart was drenching with fear and I didn’t know what to do it was just far too late for me to be saved.
“Where am I, where am I?” I yelled.
“Why you’re in Ghost Haunts.”
This ugly skinny guy came walking out of the woods with a head shaped like a crown and shoes like bananas.
“Hi,” I exclaimed in the most polite voice.
“My name is Rose.”
“Oh, hi my name is Rarar.” He answered.
“Let’s take a walk in the woods,” he said in the most unbarring way.
“Ok.”
“So do you even have a place to stay here?” Rarar questioned.“You can stay at the Queens castle.”
“Ok” I said.
“She’s really nice she’ll give you a whole apartment.” he explained
“Tell me about your land?” I asked.
“This land is not as dreadful as you may think. It’s just the witch’s lands that we’re on right now. She’s the one that named the town, Ghost Haunts. We’re walking to our side of the land which is colorful and happy. But in two days we have to have the right person to defeat the witch.
“That sounds easy!” I answered.
“Oh but its not,” replied Rarar.
“Why?”
“She has powers as much as to equal three tons that’s what, 3,000 pounds.”
“Oh wow,” I answered maybe not!
Then we entered this big beautiful circle of plants.
“There it is!” he exclaimed.
“Let’s go!”
“Hi your majesty my name is rose.
“What a beautiful name,” the Queen said delightfully.
“Do you need a hotel to stay in?”
“I guess your majesty, but I would rather go home.”
“Where’s your home?” the Queen said.
“Virginia.”
“If you say so, I’ll take you to a magical tube that will take you home.”
“But for now you must stay in your hotel for tonight.”
“Ok.”
Taken up by her to my hotel I thought why didn’t I turn around? Sure this Queen is nice but I can’t stay here of course I would be going home tomorrow I hope.
In the morning
“Wake up,” I heard a voice. “Ahh I slept so good,” I answered.
“I bet you did do you still want to go home?” she asked.
“Yes!” I replied.
“Here’s is a ball gown to remember me. Why don’t you put it on?”
“Ok,” I slipped it on and felt the sparkles all around it. I felt like a princess.
“Now I’ll take you to the magical tube where you want to go home.” We walked and walked and I finally saw the magical tube.
“Wait,” I exclaimed.
“I can’t go home I have to defeat the witch for your kingdom!”
“What did you say?” asked the Queen.“I said I have to defeat the witch for you guys!” I said even louder so that everyone that was in the room could hear me.
“No no no honey,” said the Queen.
“Wait how do you know about the witch,” she asked!
“Rarar told me he said in two days the Queen has to choose the person who can fight the witch.” I answered.
“You really think you can?” she asked.
“You bet I can I’m going to give it my all.”
“Wait that’s tonight!” exclaimed the Queen.
Thud thud thud my heart was pounding fiercely as the witch stood face to face with me! Then the Queen pulled me aside.
“The secret to beating her up is to hit her 3 times that’s what all witches don’t know that I know, now go.”On your mark get set go! I whooshed to the speed of light and hit her with a sword.
“That’s one!” I sighed already tired.
Then 3 heavy weights fell from the sky when I moved out of the way just in time before they hit me. Hit hit hit I hit the witch when all of a sudden the 3 weights came down on me again and I was out on the ground. My brain went blank for a minute but I heard screaming go Rose! Go Rose! Right then and there I jumped up and reached as far as I could but I still couldn’t. Dripping sweat I gave it my all and snap she was dead. Then the deep dark woods turned into colored grounds!
“You did it Rose!” shouted everyone.
Then everyone took me to the tube. “Thank you so much everyone I wish I could stay but my best friend is waiting up in Virginia. You see the reason why I’m here is because I fell thru a haunted house and now I really have to go!”
“Bye!” everyone shouted. “Come visit again!”
“I doubt it though!” I exclaimed.“But thanks!”
“Chrissie” I shouted. “You’re here at my house!”
“Yes, but what happened?” she asked.
“We’ll talk about that later, but right now we have a sleep over to do!"

I Found It!
I Found It!
By: Lindsey Buchanan
“No mom I don’t like that leotard,” I explained with a stern voice. I was picking out a leotard that would be perfect and purple. It went on and on the same no over and over. Then I saw a crack of shiny purple. I pulled it out felt the smooth and bumpy fabric there was nothing to say about it, that was the one!
Stumbling down the stairs I heard my mom saying, “It’s time to go!” I hurried out the door with a pair of gymnastics shoes and water bottle in my hands. I was so excited and I knew this was going to be awesome.
I stepped inside the blue clean and wondrous building. There was a room for check in, play place, watching room, and dance and there I saw it the gymnastics room full of bars, the precious pure floor, the supplies and all sorts of things! I was so excited for my first gymnastics!
An hour later I stepped out of the gymnastics room and exclaimed,
“Mom that was so fun I felt the best in the class!” I exclaimed as I caught my breath.
“Wow honey you must have had fun I love gymnastics too! You know I once wrote, never mind,” mom answered.
“What?” I replied.
On the way home I was anxious why did my mom say never mind? Why won’t she tell me something I want to know?
Heading in the house was dreading I didn’t know what to do. I’m the kind of girl who gets curious when I get tin to something I get in! I took a strong deep breath and headed up the stairs to take a shower.
20 minutes later my mom tucked me in bed and said, “Good night sweetie I’ll see you in the morning!”
“Good night mom,” I replied back.
I was stunned this was not normal we would usually talk at night before I went to bed. Determined what to do I hear whispers in my mom and dad’s room they were saying “I didn’t want her to feel discouraged to do things in gymnastics I don’t want her to find the notebook in the box in the basement.
Oh no you didn’t mom I thought in my head as I raced down the two flight of stairs, I digged through a old box labeled notebooks and found it, the book I paged through found the note, “ Never do a back bend I broke my arm!”
My alarm went off on a Saturday morning it was the song “off the chain” I loved that song. I got out of bed and flipped through notes I saw, “you can do it you can make it to the champion ship!” now feeling better I headed down stairs got some breakfast and left with my mom to gymnastics.
I headed inside to my coach and said, “Hey!”
“Hi,” she exclaimed back!
“Okay today were going to work on back bend kick over’s, now I know it looks hard but it’s not, you will simply do a back bend and kick as hard as you can like this.”
Holding back my fear I tried it, dreddingly I took my legs tried to kick I couldn’t instead I heard a something crack tumbling down on my arm I screamed and cried my coach immediately called through the whole gym and said, “ Katie’s mom please come to the gymnastics room right away!”
Screaming crying my mom slammed the clean smooth door, now smeared and rushed over to me!
“Honey are you okay!?”
“No!” I said still crying.
“I was watching her until it happened to fact for my arms to catch her!” exclaimed coach feeling guilty.
“Well I better take her to the doctor I hope she didn’t break it,” Replied mom.
“Good luck!”
As my mom hauled me out on her shoulders like a baby, I wished I have never looked in that book. Inspite of what to do I pulled my arm and started crying again.
“I think I broke it,” I explained with a sorrowful voice.
“I think so too,” replied mom.
Raced, rushed, pushed I was in the doctor’s office with nothing but me and my purple leotard on. I was waiting for the doctor to push the big brown wooden door open, and call my name Katie!”
Finally I heard my name. I rushed to him with my mom and I, we headed to the scanning room. I sat down in a squishy chair and the doctor told me to put my arm under the light I did so and it flashed. I was scared my arm seemed broken and if it was broken it was all because of me looking in that stink’n journal. I headed to the room where there were chairs and a screen up with my arm.
“The bones were misplaced it seems when you fell you landed on it to hard and your bone slid into the other bone, for the most part it is broken,” explained the doctor. Those hideous words filled my eyes with tears trying not to spill out. I leaned on my mom’s shoulder, “Mom when am I going to get my cast on?”
“Were going to skip school and get it on tomorrow,” explained mom.”
Tears rolled down my cheek just like when I fell, and from now on NO GYMNASTICS.
Weeks went on and I still had my purple cast on. I hadn’t looked in that journal since then and I’m not planning on doing that but something has been prompting me to look at page 11. I held the solid journal in my hands and I opened it to page11. It said “Never do gymnastics again if you broke your arm.”
I raced down stairs grabbed my arm and explained. “Mom I’m just going to blurt this out, this is the book that made me break my arm thanks to the sentences “never do gymnastics again if you broke your arm.” And never do a back bend I broke my arm.” These sentences made me think discouraged of it so I felt afraid when it came time to actually do it!” I explained.
Echo’s filled the house with words of mean fullness, I was officially mad! I could tell that my mom was trying to process the words and then she said, “That was just a book about what happened when I was little.
“Then why did you not tell me that night!”
“Because I didn’t want you to feel discouraged.”Said mom.
“Well I’m discouraged I broke my arm!”
“Honey I’m sorry but at least you’re getting your cast off tomorrow,”
“I am, well I’m still mad!”
I stomped off to my room like an ants getting its jobs done! And I was going to get my job done! I am getting my cast off tomorrow!
The saw cutting through my cast sounded like a nail scraping into a chalk board. But that was supposed to happen I had my gooey arm back ready to hit the gymnastics floor I knew I was going to make it to the championships the feeling I had was astonishing. I headed home with my squishy new arm and my mom.
Weeks went on and I finally was going to gymnastics. I went in, my coach was surprised I was there after what happened. I wasn’t going to believe anything in that journal and even if I saw the bad phrases I wasn’t going to believe it, I shouldn’t even believed it when I first saw it but what happened in the past happened in the past I can’t change it. After what I thought without saying anything, I went on the floor and did a backbend kick over! Soon my coach was clapping in surprise, it wasn’t her that was the only one surprised I was surprised to!
“All right class today we will do skills on everything in the gym. That’s how you get to the champion ship, the last test to your next level.” “It’s also possible to win a gold medal.” Explained coach.
My heart was pounding fiercely, the champion ship, a gold metal!? This was amazing I was going to give it my all!
“Check check check.” Coach explained in delight.
“Yay I’m going to champion ship even with my arm? And that wasn’t getting processed through my head I couldn’t believe it! The only thing I needed to do was apologize to my mom, because it turns out that that wasn’t that bad after all now that I know what to believe and what not. I headed into the car and on the way home I explained,” “Mom I’m sorry for that fight we had I was just tired and thought I would never get my cast off.” I explained.
“It's okay I know I regret what I wrote in there. There’s nothing I knew back then. But I know you need to go to bed right away because coach said that the champion ship was tomorrow. I rushed up stairs and yanked out my pajamas. And soon enough I was in bed with me and my cozy blankets tumbled on to me like ice cream toppings.
Before I knew it I was getting my leotard on and was on my way to champion ship. Soon I was there with my first test, 5 fly springs in a row. The testers held up a 360 this was awesome. The crowd was clapping their hands off as the music filled the gym with echoes. This was more than amazing I could not just stand there I had to smile.
Soon the tests were over and I was ready to here who won. The announcer held the stiff microphone in his hands and gave a big yelp “Katie Jonson”! The crowd began to cheer as the music, confetti and lights were shining on me. This was astounding. The gold beam stood on me with the lights reflecting. I won thanks for my gymnastics journal that told me I would make it here.

i am lucky to have a best friend!
i am lucky to have a best friend
By: Lindsey Buchanan
Everyone should have a best friend. When you need help you have them, I have friends like that for example I have someone to laugh with, I have someone to talk to and I feel like I’m in one place.
I have someone to laugh with having someone to laugh with is the main thing in friendship let me tell you why. When you laugh with someone that’s your best friend you feel like it’s the time of your life. When me and my best friend have sleepovers you laugh whatever you think is funny, for example playing hungry hippos or playing squirrel with a video camera. You laugh about anything in the world, what you see what you want. You will always have her around to laugh. A friend is someone who under stands your past, believes in your future, and accepts the way you are. That makes me think of laughing with your best friend and knowing that there right there by your side laughing with you. One time my best friend came over to my house and we randomly just started to make up a weird game. I knew this was going to lead to some crazy giggling. So I kept going along with whatever she was doing and soon enough we were laughing, laughing, and laughing I know she is my best friend because we laugh every time were together.
I have someone to talk to if you have someone to talk to it really makes your friendship stronger you have to be able to trust your best friend and that’s what makes it easier in your life. When you have someone to talk to you let out whatever you’re thinking about. You should feel like you lean on her for company. Things that are private will stay safe with her and you can trust her. If you are in trouble if you need a hand just call my number because I’m your friend. That makes me think of someone who cares about you.
I feel like I’m in one place. I feel like my whole world is revolved around my best friend. You should feel like you have nothing to worry about because they have your back no matter what. You feel welcomed to anything. You’ll never feel up set or hurt. And you feel like you’re in one place. Sometimes we put walls up not to keep people out but to see who cares enough to knock them down. This makes me think of someone who cares enough for you to help them and be thankful for them.
Truly great friends are hard to find difficult to leave and impossible to forget. I feel so lucky to have a best friend that I can laugh with, who I can talk to and who I can feel in one place with. That quote reminds me of my best friend I know that it would be hard to find my best friends again and I can never forget about them.
I'm super man!

Forward, backward, racing, roaring, twisting, turning, tumbling, flying Superman roller coaster at Six Flags! I look up as I sit in my seat wondering if this is the roller coaster to be on. I had been waiting 2 hours straight in a winding line. I felt so ready, and so anxious, and just so ready to go!
Our hearts were thumping so hard, almost as if we were going to vibrate the seat! I sat there tight in my seat as I yanked the harness over my head, which caused me to feel squished. Then I heard the click clank of the button that was going to push us to position. It felt funny and weird because I was facing downward to the medal station.
Then before I knew it we were rising to the sky on the chain lift. Then it was a twist that would push us strongly down the drop. Before I could tell where I was we were flying! I felt frightened for I saw people’s eyes widen an inch taller than usual, almost as if they were going to pop out. Then at that moment I felt like superman!
I don’t know if a roller coaster could be more thrilling I thought as I screamed while my mouth looked like a ghost booing! Out of all the roller coasters this was the one to be on. Then the flash of the camera struck me as my eyes almost blew out as I screamed.
Finally we bumpty bumped back into the station. After we exclaimed, “That was so worth the wait!” as I caught my breath as if it were going to fly away!
